Sankey downplays SEC split over 24‑team playoff expansion

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey used the meeting in Miramar Beach to signal patience on the 24‑team College Football Playoff debate. He said no decisions will be made before the Dec. 1 deadline and stressed the committee still has time to weigh options. While the Big Ten voiced unanimous support for expansion, Sankey dismissed speculation the SEC might break away and noted the league’s views remain split.

Sankey reminded members that the conference never achieved a unanimous vote when the playoff grew from four to twelve teams, suggesting a larger model would face similar dissent. He warned a bigger field could dilute the SEC’s regular‑season TV ratings and reduce the stakes of late‑season games, a concern he likened to pro leagues’ modest postseason expansions and could affect bowl selections.

Despite the discord, Sankey’s approach remains low‑key: gather data, inform the committee, and avoid premature rule‑making. He cited past discussions on a 16‑team format as a template for this week’s deliberations. The SEC will emerge with a position that balances competitive integrity and revenue, and that stance will shape the CFP’s next iteration.
