ACC Backs 24-Team CFP Expansion to Boost Playoff Access

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips endorsed a 24-team College Football Playoff expansion Wednesday, backing a model that would give more conference contenders a shot at the national title. The Big Ten originally proposed the format, which has gained momentum as playoff discussions evolve following last month's spring meetings.

Phillips argued that leaving out championship-caliber teams undermines program investment, referencing Florida State and Notre Dame's recent playoff-worthy seasons. Coaches emphasized that expanded access addresses scheduling challenges from larger conferences and the shift to nine-game divisions, while Miami's national championship run highlighted the need for better inclusion.

Despite ACC support, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey remains committed to a 16-team format. SMU coach Rhett Lashlee noted the expansion could fix the calendar by eliminating conference title games and moving the championship earlier. Nothing is finalized, with decisions needing completion by December 1 for 2027 implementation.
