CFP Expansion Talks Stall as 24-Team Format Faces Logistical Hurdles

College Football Playoff leaders met in Denver to examine a potential 24-team playoff field, but executive director Rich Clark acknowledged significant unresolved questions about implementation. While discussions covered both 16 and 24-team options, Clark noted the larger expansion generated more debate due to its departure from the current 12-team structure.

The meeting included ESPN executives and industry consultants, though no revenue projections or concrete scheduling details emerged. Clark emphasized that commissioners raised concerns about whether playoff revenue could offset losses from eliminated conference championship games. The Big Ten and SEC hold primary control over any format changes, with commissioner Greg Sankey expressing preference for 16 teams despite not opposing 24.

A December 1 deadline looms for decisions affecting the 2027 season. Clark described the discussions as productive but admitted each answer spawned multiple follow-up questions. The CFP staff will work with media advisers before the next scheduled meeting in September.

The format change remains uncertain given conference disagreements and logistical complexity. Without consensus between the Big Ten and SEC, the playoff will maintain its current 12-team structure. Clark confirmed the CFP is also reviewing potential changes to its metrics and recusal policies.
