Aryna Sabalenka crashed out of the French Open quarterfinals Wednesday, suffering a stunning collapse against 25th-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. The world No. 1 led 6-3, 4-1 and was two points from victory at 5-3, but her game disintegrated as Shnaider mounted a remarkable comeback.

Shnaider, who had never advanced past the third round in a major, capitalized on Sabalenka's mental fragility. The Belarusian made 57 unforced errors throughout the match, including 17 in the final set, and admitted she "got into a very deep, deep, dark hole" mentally after losing her second-set lead. Wind conditions exposed Sabalenka's flat groundstrokes, which offered little margin for error.

With Sabalenka eliminated, a first-time Grand Slam champion will be crowned at Roland Garros. The four semifinalists—Mirra Andreeva, Marta Kostyuk, Shnaider, and Maja Chwalinska—have never reached a Slam final before. Kostyuk's flat game could benefit from potential roof closure due to rain forecast.
