World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler made his first visit to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club this week while preparing for the Memorial Tournament. The 2024 Masters and PGA Championship winner is chasing his third consecutive Memorial title and aims to complete the career Grand Slam with a U.S. Open victory later this month.

Scheffler described the course as having generous fairways but extremely difficult green complexes that will challenge players. The rough serves as a significant penalty for missed fairways, creating harsh lies that complicate approach shots. His assessment comes after studying the setup that previously hosted the 2018 U.S. Open, where Brooks Koepka won at 1-over par.

Rory McIlroy, who completed his own career Grand Slam in 2024, joined Scheffler in evaluating the course on Monday. McIlroy noted the first cut of rough reaches five inches and can extend three paces wide, making any deviation from the fairway costly. Both players agreed the greens were rolling at approximately 11.2 on a stimpmeter, with McIlroy suggesting they should remain at that speed rather than accelerating further.

Scheffler enters the Memorial in search of his first victory since January, despite ranking first in strokes gained per round. The three-time defending champion will attempt to become the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win the Memorial three straight times.
