Rory McIlroy sits in strong position at the US Open after posting a one-under 69 in Thursday's opening round, one of just six players in the morning wave to break par at the challenging Shinnecock Hills layout. The world No 2 recovered from a bogey-bogey finish to remain within striking distance of the leaders.

Fog caused a two-hour suspension during the first round, though strong winds never fully materialized at the iconic New York course. Despite the weather delay, Shinnecock Hills still demanded precision from the field, with only a handful managing under-par rounds in difficult scoring conditions.

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler struggled with his irons but carded an opening 72, keeping him in contention to claim a fifth major title. A victory would make him just the seventh male player to complete the career Grand Slam. Both McIlroy and Scheffler headline Friday's afternoon wave, with the Northern Irishman grouped alongside Ludvig Åberg and Tommy Fleetwood.

Friday's second round tees off from 11:35am UK time, with Sky Sports providing live coverage from 12:30pm. The tournament's outcome will likely be decided over the weekend as players navigate Shinnecock's demanding fairways and fast greens.
