Ohio State $100M Abuse Settlement

Ohio State University approved a $100 million settlement to resolve claims from former student athletes alleging sexual abuse by team doctor Richard Strauss. The agreement covers all but one of the 280 survivors still involved in litigation that began in 2018.

The university has already settled with 317 former athletes for more than $61 million. Strauss worked at Ohio State from 1978 to 1998 and ran an off-campus clinic where the abuse reportedly occurred. Many victims included former NFL players.

University president Ravi Bellamkonda emphasized during the board meeting that "the survivors of the Strauss abuse are all Buckeyes, will always be a part of our family and our community." An independent report previously found university personnel knew of complaints as early as 1979 but failed to investigate.

The settlement resolves a painful chapter in the school's history, though the financial cost represents just one component of the university's accountability for systemic institutional failures that allowed abuse to continue for decades.
