Mike Leach appears on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot for the first time following an adjustment to coaching eligibility requirements. The National Football Foundation lowered the winning percentage threshold from .600 to .595, allowing Leach's .596 career mark (158-107) to qualify him for consideration.

Leach revolutionized offensive football with his Air Raid system and built an extensive coaching tree that includes Lincoln Riley, Sonny Dykes, and Josh Heupel. His Washington State teams captured two division titles, including a 2018 squad that finished No. 10 nationally. The eligibility change addresses years of criticism from those who argued Leach's impact transcended traditional statistics.

Former Texas A&M and Pitt coach Jackie Sherrill joins Leach on the 2027 ballot after his .592 winning percentage also fell below the previous standard. The ballot features 80 FBS players including Heisman winners Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III.

NFF president Steve Hatchell said the adjustment reflects dialogue with sport leaders about recognizing contributions beyond narrow statistical thresholds. The Hall of Fame class will be announced in January 2027 during the College Football Playoff.
