Team Developments and League Business
Team ownership structures are undergoing potential shifts in Phoenix, where owner Mat Ishbia espn.com is pursuing confidential binding mediation that could see him raise his stake in the Suns espn.com to 96% by buying out minority investors holding a collective 13% interest. On the court, Lakers espn.com guard Marcus Smart is drawing praise for his incredible resilience, fueling the team's ascent in the West after returning from a severe, self-inflicted hand injury that required intensive medical care. Furthermore, NBA insiders are actively analyzing the league's trajectory toward expansion, detailing what is currently known about adding two new franchises and how a potential expansion draft might be structured.
Rookie Performances & Unsung Heroes
As the league evaluates its emerging talent pool, NBA insiders released their comprehensive breakdown of each team’s unsung hero for the season, ranging from Sixth Man of the Year candidates to impactful late-round picks. This evaluation comes as attention remains focused on rookies who are exceeding expectations, though injuries are creeping in for other key contributors across the association. In a bizarre defensive sequence, Oklahoma City Thunder espn.com guard Alex Caruso was penalized after swatting away a layup attempt with his shoe, resulting in both a goaltending call and a technical foul for the illegal defensive maneuver. Separately, Cleveland Cavaliers espn.com guard Max Strus marked his long-awaited return to the lineup by scoring 16 points in the first half against the Dallas Mavericks espn.com, making him the first player since the 1997-98 season to register at least 15 points in a season debut after an extended absence.
League Culture & Off-Court Tidbits
