National Transportation Safety Board investigators revealed a timeline Tuesday showing the pilots of an Amazon cargo jet that crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday appeared to attempt aborting the landing seconds after touchdown. The plane, traveling at 182 mph, touched down nose-first — an unstable approach — and took seven seconds to apply brakes. Four seconds after all landing gear contacted the runway, the pilots released brakes and increased thrust to go-around levels, a "delayed decision" that cost crucial runway length.

They reapplied brakes 11 seconds before the recording ended but never deployed speed brakes or thrust reversers. The aircraft exited the airport, struck two vehicles on a public road, and killed five people. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said investigators will interview the pilots and release the cockpit voice recorder transcript Wednesday.

Aviation experts, including retired United Airlines pilot Steven Arroyo and former FAA safety official Michael O'Donnell, called the sequence unprecedented and indicative of a loss of control.
