Rivian Launches Apple Watch App for R1S/R1T Remote Controls

Electric vehicle maker Rivian today introduced an Apple Watch app for its R1S and R1T models, bringing remote vehicle controls directly to owners' wrists. The app allows users to customize up to four one-tap shortcuts for common functions like locking doors, opening windows, accessing trunks, and sounding the alarm.

Beyond basic controls, the app leverages the Apple Watch's Digital Crown for adjusting cabin temperature and battery charging targets. A dedicated complication displays the vehicle's charge level on the watch face for quick reference. This launch follows Rivian's recent rollout of Apple Wallet car key support for second-generation R1S and R1T vehicles, which uses Ultra Wideband technology for seamless passive entry.

While some reports suggested the app was already available, TechCrunch indicated it won't launch until next week. Owners should watch for an iPhone app update, as installing the new version will automatically extend functionality to the Apple Watch. The timing aligns with Rivian's broader strategy to integrate its vehicles with Apple's ecosystem, though first-generation model owners will have more limited digital key capabilities compared to newer vehicles.
