Apple's Sound Recognition feature lets your iPhone listen for your doorbell even when you're wearing noise-canceling headphones. The accessibility tool continuously monitors ambient sounds through your iPhone's microphone and sends notifications through connected headphones with a vibration alert. While designed primarily for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, the feature proves equally valuable for remote workers who regularly wear AirPods or other noise-canceling headphones.

To enable doorbell alerts, navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Sound & Name Recognition > Sound Recognition, then toggle on the feature and select "Door Bell" under the Household category. Your iPhone may need to download a 30MB file before activation. If your specific doorbell isn't recognized reliably, you can train the system by placing your iPhone near the doorbell and ringing it five times through the Custom Appliance or Doorbell option.

The feature also detects smoke alarms, dog barking, babies crying, and running water. iOS automatically adds a Sound Recognition toggle to Control Center for quick access. However, Apple cautions against relying on this feature in high-risk or emergency situations, as it's designed for convenience rather than critical safety alerts.
