iPhone 17 Loses Siri Voice & Dictation Boost

Apple unveiled its newest on‑device AI model at WWDC 2026, revealing that only two flagship features benefit from the upgrade: more expressive Siri voices and a sharper system‑wide dictation engine. The model demands 12GB of unified memory, a threshold that excludes the standard iPhone 17 from the enhanced experience for users who rely on voice input.

Apple’s decision to raise the memory bar after two years of an 8GB baseline marks the first time the company has limited the most advanced model. Devices that meet the requirement include the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, M4‑chip iPads, M3‑chip Macs and the Vision Pro with M5. These gain voice tuning and improved dictation.

Users on the base iPhone 17 still receive the new chatbot‑style Siri introduced with iOS 27, but they miss the upgraded voices and the more precise dictation engine. For frequent typists, the difference will be noticeable; for casual users, the change may pass unnoticed as they type messages, notes, or transcribe voice memos throughout the day.

iOS 27 remains in developer beta, with a public beta slated for next month and a full release expected in the fall. The 12GB threshold illustrates Apple’s ongoing push for higher‑performance AI models, signaling a shift toward more demanding hardware in future flagship devices. This move may force rivals to raise memory limits to keep pace.
