Intel Testing iPhone, iPad, Mac Chip Production for Apple

Apple may be diversifying its chip manufacturing away from long-time exclusive partner TSMC, as analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Intel has begun small-scale testing for fabricating certain chips destined for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac lineups. This potential arrangement involves Apple utilizing Intel's advanced 18A process technology for these components, with production volume expected to increase substantially between 2027 and 2028. Kuo specified that Intel's role would be strictly limited to fabrication, using Apple's existing chip designs.

Sourcing chips from a second supplier like Intel would grant Apple leverage in cost negotiations and strengthen its supply chain resilience. Furthermore, engaging Intel for manufacturing, potentially within the U.S., aligns with current political desires favoring domestic production, though Kuo cautions that TSMC will still supply over 90% of Apple's total chip volume.

This move marks a potential reunion of sorts, though different from the era when Intel designed x86 processors for Macs before Apple began its transition to custom silicon in 2020. The chips being tested are expected to be destined for lower-end models across Apple's device portfolio. While rumors about this collaboration have circulated, no official confirmation has been issued by either company regarding the future chip supply agreement.
