ChatGPT links bank accounts via Plaid for budgeting advice

OpenAI has added a personal finance tool to ChatGPT that connects directly to users' financial accounts through a Plaid partnership. The integration covers more than 12,000 financial institutions, letting ChatGPT access bank accounts, credit cards, and investment portfolios to offer budgeting guidance and portfolio insights.

The feature serves up a dashboard showing spending, subscriptions, and portfolio performance in real time. Users can ask specific questions like "What did my recent vacation actually cost me?" or "What's the biggest risk in my portfolio?" ChatGPT sees balances, transactions, and liabilities but can't view full account numbers or initiate transactions.

Pro ChatGPT users in the US can access the feature now on iOS and the web via Plaid, with Intuit integration and Plus tier support planned for later. This moves ChatGPT into direct competition with dedicated budgeting apps by turning natural conversation into financial analysis.
