OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Excel in beta, embedding its AI assistant directly into spreadsheets to help financial analysts build and update models using natural language commands. Powered by GPT-5.4 Thinking, the add-in allows users to generate formulas, run scenarios, and analyze data without manual formula writing. The tool targets power users who need to move faster while maintaining model accuracy.

Financial institutions can now access trusted data sources directly within ChatGPT, including integrations with FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, and S&P Global. These partnerships bring market data, company research, and financial documents into a single workflow, reducing the time analysts spend gathering inputs. OpenAI reports its internal benchmarks show performance on investment banking tasks jumping from 43.7% to 87.3% with the new model.

ChatGPT for Excel is rolling out to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Plus users in the US, Canada, and Australia, with Google Sheets support coming soon. Enterprise customers get additional security controls including RBAC, SAML SSO, and data encryption. The tool preserves Excel's native structure while explaining its reasoning step-by-step, allowing teams to audit changes before accepting them.
