Apple's OLED iMac Upgrade: Samsung and LG Race to Meet 2029 Timeline

Apple is collaborating with Samsung Display and LG Display to develop a 24-inch OLED iMac with 600 nits of brightness, a significant leap from the current 500-nit LCD model. Samsung plans to deliver 220 PPI QD-OLED panels by mid-2026 using advanced inkjet printing equipment, while LG explores a 5-stack W-OLED design to boost brightness. Both suppliers are racing to meet Apple’s demand for the highest-resolution OLED display ever featured on a Mac.

The project, internally codenamed fLEAP, eliminates Fine Metal Masks (FMM) to streamline production. LG’s prototype adds a green layer to its W-OLED stack, a departure from its existing 4-stack technology. Samsung’s QD-OLED approach, however, may face challenges achieving Apple’s brightness target without color filters. Analysts suggest LG’s delay could push the iMac’s OLED release to 2029 or 2030, though Apple is prioritizing an M5 chip upgrade for the 2025 refresh.

This shift to OLED aligns with Apple’s broader display strategy, including rumored foldable iPhones and MacBook Pro upgrades. The move would position Apple ahead of competitors like Dell and HP, which currently offer OLED monitors only in niche product lines. However, OLED’s susceptibility to burn-in and higher production costs remain hurdles.

Apple’s OLED iMac ambitions could redefine all-in-one computing, but the 2029+ timeline suggests cautious execution. With Samsung Display and LG Display leading the charge, the industry may see accelerated OLED adoption in premium desktops. For now, the M4-powered iMac remains untouched since its 2024 refresh, leaving enthusiasts waiting for next-gen specs.
