LG Display is developing a five-layer OLED panel structure that could end up in a future iMac. By adding a third blue layer to the existing blue-green-blue-red pattern, the new arrangement aims to prevent screen burn-in and increase brightness. This extra stacking spreads the electrical load, which is critical for high pixel densities where smaller emitters are prone to shorter lifespans and image retention.

Apple has previously requested information from Samsung Display and LG Display regarding OLED iMac development. Discussions centered on a 24-inch panel with 600 nits of brightness and 218 PPI. While LG Display has demonstrated high-density 5K panels, the primary challenge for five-stack technology remains cost and the complexity of the deposition process.

Both LG and Samsung are targeting 2028 to have the first iMac OLED panels developed, though a commercial launch likely won't happen until 2029 at the earliest. In the meantime, Apple is expected to refresh its current LCD-based iMac with a new processor later this year.
