Apple’s Air 2 May Stand Alone After Ultra‑Thin Rival Dropouts

Apple’s iPhone Air 2 could become the only next‑generation ultra‑thin flagship because the original model logged barely 700,000 activations after price cuts. Digital Chat Station’s Weibo post highlighted the shortfall and warned rivals that their follow‑ups are likely scrapped.

The leak drew attention to the stark contrast with a domestic Chinese ultra‑thin phone that managed only 50,000 activations. Supply‑chain analysts Ming‑Chi Kuo noted that Apple asked suppliers to cut capacity by more than 80% early in 2026, a sign that the Air line is essentially out of production.

Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung all halted their own ultra‑thin projects after poor sales of the Air and Galaxy S25 Edge. The ripple effect shows a broader industry retreat from the ultra‑thin trend that once promised slimmer, lighter flagship designs.

Apple plans to push the Air 2 in spring 2027, adding a second rear camera, lower price, vapor‑chamber cooling, and a thinner OLED display. The company will also request an ultra‑thin Face ID module to free internal space for the new camera.
