Apple Eyes Edge‑to‑Edge OLED for 20th‑Anniversary iPhone

Apple is already drafting a second‑generation curved‑edge OLED for its 2027 20th‑anniversary iPhone, a move that could erase the last remaining bezel. The new panel will bend around all four sides, offering a near‑borderless visual that rivals the iPhone X’s historic shift.

In the first rollout, the display uses a magnesium‑silver (MgAg) cathode alloy. While MgAg can introduce distortion and brightness loss along the curves, Apple is willing to accept the trade‑off for the 2027 model. A year later, the company plans to swap to indium zinc oxide (IZO) electrodes, which promise higher transparency and reduced heat.

Samsung Display and LG Display have already been alerted to prepare for the two‑stage production. LG’s recent ₩1.106 trillion investment—about US$790 million—in OLED infrastructure signals a push to meet the new tech’s demands. Samsung is assessing whether existing lines can handle the required hardware, though a dedicated line may materialize.

This dual‑phase rollout signals Apple’s push toward an all‑glass, cut‑out‑free design. Consumers will soon see a cleaner display, while the industry must adapt supply chains to support the next‑generation OLED technology.
