According to a teardown video by Joseph Taylor, Apple's second-generation AirTag features several internal modifications. While the external design remains essentially unchanged from the original, the internal components reveal a thinner PCB and repositioned battery connectors. These alterations suggest possible efforts to improve manufacturing processes or deter tampering with the device.

The speaker assembly has also seen updates, with a slightly larger coil and a more securely fastened magnet. This could make unauthorized modifications more challenging. After pairing the device to an iPhone, the sound it emits is now at a slightly higher pitch. Furthermore, the packaging has been redesigned with a narrower shape and updated artwork.

These changes may be aimed at enhancing the AirTag's durability and security. The more secure magnet and increased use of adhesive inside the device suggest Apple is trying to prevent easy tampering. The updated packaging also provides a fresh look for the product.

With only minor external changes, the second generation AirTag seems to focus on internal refinements. Although the core functionality of item tracking remains the same, these design changes indicate Apple’s ongoing efforts to refine its product design. It shows that even seemingly simple devices are constantly evolving.
