Google's cross-platform file sharing feature that lets Pixel 10 and Apple device users share files directly via Quick Share-AirDrop interoperability is expanding beyond Pixel phones. Eric Kay, vice president of engineering for the Android platform, confirmed during a recent Pixel Labs tour that the feature will reach more Android devices in 2026.

Google enabled the feature by converting the Quick Share extension from a stub system app into a full APK distributed via the Play Store, making it easier to update and deploy across manufacturers' devices. This technical approach signals Google's intent to make AirDrop interoperability a broader Android feature rather than a Pixel-exclusive capability. Nothing has already confirmed it's working to bring the feature to its phones, while Qualcomm has hinted at Quick Share-AirDrop interoperability support for Snapdragon-powered devices.

The feature uses a multi-layered security model including encrypted transfer channels, built-in platform protections on both Android and iOS, and explicit consent steps before file reception. Currently limited to "Everyone for 10 Minutes" sharing modes, Google aims to work with Apple to support "Contacts Only" mode in the future. This expansion represents a significant step toward seamless cross-platform file sharing between the two dominant mobile ecosystems.
