Samsung Display is pushing hard into rollable screen technology, aiming to dominate a market where Chinese competitors have pressured its foldable business. According to Korean industry sources, the company is in talks with Samsung Electronics to develop a rollable-screen smartphone that could launch as early as mid-2028. This follows years of development since Samsung Display first showcased rollable concepts in 2023.

The rumored device, potentially named Galaxy Z Slide or Galaxy Z Roll, is expected to feature a 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 440.6 ppi resolution. Market research suggests a successor could arrive in 2030, though rollout timelines remain uncertain given the technical hurdles involved. Samsung already supplies rollable panels for Lenovo's laptops, giving it manufacturing experience ahead of any phone launch.

Rollable screens present greater structural complexity than foldable alternatives, making mass production challenging. However, Samsung Display reportedly maintains a significant lead over rivals like BOE, which recently surpassed Samsung in the foldable market. This technological advantage positions Samsung to control the rollable segment initially.

If successful, a Galaxy Z Slide launch would mark a major shift from Samsung's current foldable lineup, potentially leapfrogging competitors still focused on traditional folding mechanisms. The company needs this innovation to maintain its premium smartphone positioning against Chinese display manufacturers.
