Samsung sued by patent troll over display tech

Patent‑assertion firm Tau Ceti Ventures LLC has filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, accusing Samsung of infringing ten patents covering brighter displays, burn‑in mitigation, battery efficiency and cost‑reduction methods. The suit alleges Samsung knowingly used the technology across multiple device lines, seeking a finding of willful infringement and damages.

The alleged infringements span the Galaxy S25 flagship, the Galaxy Z Flip7 foldable, the Galaxy Watch8, the Galaxy Tab A9+, the Galaxy Book4 notebook, plus a swath of Samsung smart TVs and monitors. Tau Ceti claims the company was either aware of the patents or deliberately ignored them, and it also demands reimbursement for its legal fees. Similar complaints have recently been lodged against LG and HP.

For Samsung, the lawsuit adds to a growing docket of patent‑troll actions that can delay product rollouts and increase litigation costs. Even if the case settles, the claim forces the conglomerate to reassess its patent‑clearance processes and may push suppliers to renegotiate licensing terms. The dispute underscores how non‑practicing entities continue to leverage broad patent portfolios to extract settlements from major OEMs.
