Chinese giant Huawei has jumped ahead of Samsung and Apple with the Pura X Max, the first horizontally wide foldable smartphone. Unlike the tall‑screen designs dominating the market, the device unfolds into a short, wide panel that feels natural when closed. Preorders opened on Weibo with a 1,000 yuan deposit, though global sales remain unconfirmed.

The outer screen is expected to measure about 5.5 inches, while the inner panel stretches to roughly 7.69 inches with a 16:10 ratio. Rumors point to the Kirin 9030 processor, shared with the upcoming Pura 90 series. Five colorways—black, white, blue, gold, orange—were teased, with gold and orange possibly limited editions. Available for pre‑order later this month.

Full pricing will be disclosed on April 20, the same day Huawei hosts its launch event, leaving consumers to guess where the device will sit against premium foldables. Absence of Google services outside China could limit appeal, yet the form factor challenges competitors to rethink their own designs and speed up development soon for now.

Consumers eager for a wider viewing experience now have a concrete option, albeit limited to the Chinese market for now. Huawei’s gamble demonstrates that hardware innovation can outpace ecosystem constraints, forcing rivals to prioritize form factor diversity. The Pura X Max therefore reshapes expectations for what a foldable should deliver.
