Google's Calling Accounts Brings VoIP to Android Dialer

Google is rolling out a feature that lets Android users make VoIP calls directly from their default phone dialer. The "Calling accounts" feature, spotted in the latest Android Canary 2605 build running on a Pixel 9, allows apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Messenger to appear alongside regular cellular calls in the dialer interface.

This integration relies on Android's telecom framework, which lets third-party apps register their calls so they appear in the native phone app just like traditional cellular calls. Users will see a new option in settings that enables third-party apps to appear in their call history, eliminating the need to jump between apps when making internet-based calls.

The feature will be available on any device running Android 16.1 and above. This brings a more unified calling experience that bridges the gap between traditional cellular calls and VoIP communications, something users have been requesting for years.
