DJI sues Insta360 over Luna Ultra design clash

DJI filed two lawsuits in a federal court against Insta360, claiming the Chinese maker’s newly released Luna Ultra copies the design of DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4P. The complaint targets the handheld’s elongated body, neck, rotatable screen and control wheel, elements DJI says are protected by its ornamental‑design patents. The filing follows months of heated competition over compact stabilizers.

The second filing cites four utility patents covering a single‑button mode switch, integrated subject‑tracking with on‑device display, image‑driven gimbal motor control and a self‑contained tracking system. DJI alleges Insta360’s Luna series employs each of these technologies, infringing patents that underpin the Osmo Pocket’s seamless operation. The patents cover firmware automating focus shifts. If upheld, the rulings could force Insta360 to redesign or withdraw the product line.

Earlier this year DJI sued Insta360 in China over alleged employee poaching and stolen R&D, showing a pattern of escalating legal battles between the two rivals. The current U.S. actions highlight how design and software patents have become weapons in the crowded handheld gimbal market, where a single infringement claim can reshape product availability. Analysts warn smaller firms feel pressure.
