Insta360 Luna Ultra Review: Gimbal Camera Challenges DJI Dominance

Insta360 enters the gimbal camera market with the Luna Ultra, a direct challenger to DJI's Osmo Pocket monopoly. The device packs dual cameras with 3x optical zoom, a 1-inch sensor, and 8K video recording capabilities. At $770, it targets the premium vlogging segment with features that DJI hasn't offered in its handheld lineup.

The standout feature is the detachable 2-inch display that transforms into a wireless controller for remote framing up to 60 feet away. A built-in microphone sits above the screen for stand-up shots without external gear. Dual lenses include an f/1.8 20mm primary and f/2.0 60mm telephoto, delivering 3x optical zoom plus 6x in-sensor and 12x digital zoom. Internal storage clocks in at 47GB with microSD expansion, powered by a 1,550mAh battery lasting roughly four hours.

Dolby Vision and I-Log color modes provide professional-grade video options, though the reviewer notes some saturation issues in bright conditions. Vertical shooting supports 3K resolution, matching DJI's limitations. The camera's larger gimbal head makes it less pocketable than the Pocket 4, despite similar body dimensions.

While DJI's Osmo Pocket 4 remains smaller and cheaper, it's unavailable in the US officially. The Luna Ultra's optical zoom and wireless display innovation justify its premium positioning. Insta360 has successfully challenged DJI's dominance in this niche, forcing competition where none existed before.
