DJI vs. Insta360: Handheld Camera Patent Showdown

DJI and Insta360 have opened a courtroom clash over their handheld stabilizers, the Osmo Pocket 3 and the Luna Ultra. DJI sued Insta360 on June 11, alleging the Luna Ultra copies design patents for the Pocket’s body, neck, scroll wheel and rotating display. Insta360 counters with claims that DJI copied its gimbal tech today.

In its suit, DJI cites five utility patents on tracking technology and seeks a permanent injunction that would bar Luna Ultra sales, plus damages “no less than a reasonable royalty,” profit disgorgement and enhanced penalties for willful infringement. Insta360 argues its earlier Link and Flow lines form the legal basis today.

In its countersuit, Insta360 accuses DJI of infringing patents covering gimbal stabilization, directional control, camera smoothness, telemetry overlay and panoramic video. The company points to its Osmo Mobile, Ronin and Osmo 360 products and claims the Luna Ultra’s core tech derives from earlier Link webcams and Flow gimbals for customers and the playing field.

The dispute carries extra weight for DJI, whose Osmo Pocket 4 launch in April faces a U.S. FCC “Covered List” ban on foreign‑made drones and cameras. DJI sells under a Xtra brand to skirt the restriction, but a ruling against Insta360 could level the playing field and solidify its stance.
