Android 16 Update: Just 7.5% of Devices Have It

Google's latest Android 16 distribution data reveals a slow adoption rate, with only 7.5% of devices running the new OS. The first public beta launched in January 2025, followed by the stable release for Pixel phones in June. Despite manufacturers offering more OS updates than ever, the rollout has been gradual across different phone models.

Flagship devices typically receive priority for updates, but even with this advantage, Android 16's market share remains low compared to older versions. The data shows Android 15 at 19.3%, Android 14 at 17.2%, and Android 13 at 13.9%. Interestingly, there are still more Android 10 devices (7.8%) than Android 16 devices in circulation. This slow adoption isn't entirely surprising given the fragmented nature of the Android ecosystem.

European regulations now require manufacturers to provide software updates for at least five years after end-of-sale, though this primarily covers security patches rather than full OS upgrades. The slow Android 16 adoption highlights the challenges of updating a diverse ecosystem spanning thousands of different devices. As Google prepares to launch Android 17 beta soon, many users are still waiting for their Android 16 update, raising questions about how quickly the next version will spread across the installed base.
