Uber Ends Waymo Partnership in Phoenix as It Shifts to Own Robotaxis

Uber and Waymo have officially ended their nearly three-year partnership in Phoenix, with the split occurring in May according to TechCrunch. The collaboration previously allowed Uber riders to request Waymo's autonomous vehicles through the Uber app, marking one of the more significant cross-platform integrations in the robotaxi space.

Waymo confirmed it has reintegrated the vehicles back into its Phoenix fleet, continuing to offer rides through its own app. The company maintains strong roots in the city, having used Phoenix streets as a testing ground before launching public autonomous rides in 2020. Waymo will also continue its public transit integration with Via and delivery services with DoorDash using these same vehicles.

For Uber, this change signals a strategic pivot toward developing proprietary autonomous vehicle technology. The ride-hailing giant has partnered with multiple companies including Avride, We Ride, and more recently Lucid and Neuro to build its own robotaxi capabilities. Rather than relying on external providers, Uber appears to be consolidating its autonomous vehicle strategy around in-house development.

This move reflects the maturing autonomous vehicle market, where companies are choosing between partnership models and vertical integration. Uber's decision to bring operations in-house suggests confidence in its own AV development timeline, though it remains to be seen whether consumers will embrace the transition.
