Sony's UK Age Checks: PlayStation Communication Features Locked Behind Verification

Sony is implementing age verification requirements for PlayStation users in the UK and Ireland, restricting access to communication, broadcasting, and certain in-game features starting June 2026. Players will need to verify their age to join parties, voice chat, text message, or use third-party chat programs like Discord. Some in-game communication tools and user-generated content sharing will also be locked behind age verification.

This move follows similar legislation adopted by several states and countries in 2025 aimed at protecting children from inappropriate content. While privacy concerns and questions about effectiveness persist, companies continue to comply with these restrictive laws. Discord began age verification policies last year but walked back some plans in early 2026 to better protect user data and anonymity. Roblox also implemented age checks, though the system reportedly encountered significant issues.

Users are already being prompted to complete the verification process ahead of the summer enforcement deadline. The trend toward age verification in gaming platforms reflects broader regulatory pressure on tech companies to implement stricter controls, despite mixed results from early implementations and ongoing debates about privacy trade-offs.
