Discord is implementing mandatory age verification for adult content starting in March. The platform will default all users to a "teen-appropriate experience" with blurred sensitive content and blocked age-restricted channels. Users seeking access to adult spaces must complete a one-time verification process using either a selfie video for age estimation or government ID submission.

This major safety update builds on Discord's previous efforts to protect minors, including banning teen dating channels and AI-generated CSAM in 2023. The company also added content filters and automated warnings following an NBC News report that 35 adults faced prosecution for crimes involving Discord communication. Discord emphasizes that selfie videos stay on user devices while ID documents are deleted "immediately after age confirmation" by vendor partners.

The verification process may require multiple submissions for some users, though Discord promises additional options in the future, including background age inference models. Alongside these technical changes, Discord is recruiting a Teen Council of 12-17-year-olds to ensure the platform understands young users' needs rather than making assumptions. Both new and existing users will need to complete verification for adult content access when the changes roll out globally in early March.

Quick Fact: Discord's Teen Council will include 10 to 12 teens aged 13 to 17.
