Discord is launching teen-by-default settings globally, marking a significant shift in how the platform protects younger users. The update, rolling out in early March, assigns all new and existing users worldwide an age-appropriate experience by default, with enhanced communication settings, restricted access to age-gated spaces, and content filtering that maintains privacy while fostering meaningful connections.

At the core of this update is a privacy-forward age assurance system that uses facial age estimation and document verification through vendor partners. Discord's new age inference model runs in the background to help determine account ownership without always requiring explicit verification. Users can complete the process once, after which their experience adapts to their verified age group. The system includes on-device processing for video selfies, quick deletion of identity documents, and private age verification status that cannot be seen by other users.

Default safety settings include content filters requiring adult verification to unblur sensitive material, restricted access to age-gated channels and servers, and message request routing for unknown contacts. Only age-assured adults can modify certain settings or access restricted content. The platform is also recruiting for its inaugural Teen Council, bringing authentic teen perspectives into safety feature development. This global rollout builds on successful implementations in the UK and Australia, reflecting Discord's commitment to creating privacy-forward, age-appropriate experiences that empower teens to engage thoughtfully while developing lifelong digital well-being skills.
