Samsung Galaxy S26 review: Minor upgrades, same old story

Samsung's Galaxy S26 arrives with a familiar formula: slight screen size bump to 6.3 inches, brighter display at 3,000 nits, and a larger 4,300mAh battery. The $899 flagship maintains the same FHD+ resolution and largely unchanged design, with cameras now housed in a unified circular island. Inside, Samsung doubles storage to 256GB and RAM to 12GB, splitting processor variants by region.

In the US, the S26 gets the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while international markets receive Samsung's new 2nm Exynos 2600 chip. Despite promising 50% better performance, battery tests revealed a quirk: the Exynos version lasted 28 hours versus 30 hours for Snapdragon in video rundown tests. Given the bigger battery, this shortfall is disappointing. Camera hardware remains unchanged with a 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto setup.

The S26's software story centers on AI expansion. Samsung adds Perplexity as a third AI assistant alongside Gemini and Bixby, though integration is limited. New features include natural language photo editing through Photo Assist and enhanced video stabilization. However, the overall experience feels remarkably similar to last year's S25, raising questions about whether Samsung is prioritizing its Ultra and foldable lines for innovation.
