Most current MacBook models support at least two external displays, but the number depends on the chip inside. Apple's lineup ranges from the budget MacBook Neo, which supports only one external display (4K at 60Hz), to the M5 Max MacBook Pro, which can drive up to four displays. The built-in screen does not affect the limit; clamshell mode does not increase it.\n\nResolution and refresh rate add complexity.

For example, the M5 MacBook Air supports up to two 6K displays at 60Hz or two 4K at 144Hz. Higher single-display options include 8K at 60Hz. The MacBook Neo's port closest to the back is the high-speed USB 3 connection and is the only one that supports video output; the forward port is USB 2 and cannot carry display signals.

The Neo also lacks Thunderbolt.\n\nThunderbolt docks simplify cabling but do not increase Apple's official display limits. Basic USB hubs are similarly limited. For setups that exceed official limits, Display Link offers a workaround using a compatible dock and the Display Link Manager app, but it compresses images and may block copy-protected video streams.
