Abbott Google Health AI Glucose Monitoring

Health care company Abbott has partnered with Google Health to connect its Lingo continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to the Google Health app. This multi-year collaboration will allow users to see metabolic data and receive AI-driven recommendations from the Google Health Coach. Lingo is intended for adults not using insulin.

However, the benefits for non-diabetics remain questionable. Engadget reported in 2023 that there is little research supporting CGM use for this population. An article from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health noted that while tracking might keep nutrition top of mind, an over-emphasis on blood sugar could lead to poor eating habits.

Dr. Idrees Mughal, known on TikTok as Dr. Idz, emphasized that even as a trained medical doctor, he would need additional data to interpret CGM results. For a layperson, he said, "it's going to be completely useless."

As part of their deal, Abbott and Google will conduct one of the largest real-world metabolic health studies. The findings may drive more device sales or subscriptions. Always consult a physician before making dietary changes.
