OpenAI Launches Codex Micro Keypad for $230

OpenAI has launched its first hardware product, the Codex Micro, a keypad developed with keyboard maker Work Louder to control the company's agentic coding feature Codex. Available to order now for $230, the device arrives ahead of the rumored Jony Ive-designed smart speaker expected later this year.

The keypad features six frosted keys with LEDs tracking agent status, programmable keys for actions like accepting or rejecting code, a dial for switching reasoning levels, and a joystick for navigating workflows. Designed for customization, it includes extra keycaps for personalized controls. The accessory complements OpenAI's recent conversion of Codex into a "super app" combining ChatGPT, Codex, and the new ChatGPT Work productivity agent.

The Codex Micro represents the least troubled of OpenAI's hardware efforts. The rumored smart speaker rollout faces complications from an Apple lawsuit accusing former employees Tang Yew Tan and Chang Liu of stealing trade secrets. Work Louder notes "limited quantity" availability, suggesting the keypad may sell out quickly.
