Netflix is adding an AI-powered recommendation tool called AI Discover to its TV app as it tries to get viewers to stop scrolling so much and watch more shows and movies. The company framed AI Discover as a testbed for new features it might make part of the core Netflix experience.
If it is available on your account, you will see a Discover tab with a red gem icon on the top navigation bar. The first test is theme-based recommendations, showing themes alongside a relevant clip from a show or movie. Themes are based on who you might be watching with, what you are in the mood for, or titles that won't take up your entire evening. They can also include new and popular titles or recommendations based on recent viewing.
After you pick an option, you can refine recommendations with more specific themes or refresh the selection. You can tell Netflix not to recommend a title again, or add titles to your list from AI Discover. Netflix said AI helps create the themes and explains results along the way, powered by a new intelligence layer that responds in real time.
AI Discover is initially available on supported TVs in English in the US. The company will gradually make the tool available to more people in the coming weeks, and it will not appear on kids profiles. This is the latest in a long string of recommendation features, including shuffle play and an Open AI-powered chatbot tested during last year's redesign.
