Meta joined forces with Microsoft, SpaceX, and the DOJ to dismantle 1.4 million scam accounts across Facebook and Instagram. This unprecedented collaboration targeted criminal networks in Southeast Asia operating romance scams and "pig butchering" schemes. Microsoft suspended 20,000 accounts, while Coinbase froze $3 million in cryptocurrency linked to these operations.

The operation specifically targeted scammers who impersonated law enforcement and offered fake jobs to Southeast Asians, sometimes forcing victims to work in scam compounds. Starlink disconnected thousands of scam kits used by these networks. Law enforcement arrested 63 suspects after the companies shared intelligence across platforms for the first time.

Meta faces criticism for allowing scammers on its platforms while reportedly profiting from their ads. The company has ramped up enforcement, removing 159 million scam ads and 10.9 million scam accounts in 2025. Meta also sued advertisers in Brazil and China over deepfake celebrity scams and deployed AI tools to detect impersonators.
