Meta blocks Oversight Board expansion plans

Meta's Oversight Board wants to expand beyond the company, particularly into AI policy, but Meta has declined to make the necessary legal changes. Board members see expertise in content moderation as valuable for generative AI companies, but Meta officials haven't committed to approving the expansion.

The board has received $280 million from Meta since its creation five years ago. While Meta claims it will fund through 2028, a source says only half of the 2028 funds have been provided amid discussions about the board's future.

Meta recently shifted away from proactive moderation, ending US fact-checking and rolling back hate speech rules without consulting the board. The board has made over 200 decisions and hundreds of recommendations, with Meta implementing changes to 75% of them, raising questions about the board's role in Meta's current strategy.
