Meta's Oversight Board has raised serious concerns about the company's inconsistent and opaque account ban processes, calling them "baffling" and highlighting significant due process issues. The board reviewed an Instagram account with 70,000 followers that was banned for threatening posts against a journalist, ultimately agreeing with the decision but questioning how it was reached.

The board found stark differences between Facebook and Instagram enforcement. While Facebook issues temporary suspensions before permanent bans, Instagram lacks this intermediate step entirely. Instead, Instagram restricts livestreaming features - a penalty that only applies to accounts with at least 1,000 followers. This creates a confusing patchwork where users face wildly different consequences for similar violations.

Over 750 public comments revealed widespread frustration with Meta's systems. Users reported being unable to appeal bans, receiving no explanations for account removals, and discovering decisions were made automatically without human oversight. Many couldn't even download their own content after being locked out.

The Oversight Board recommends clearer appeals processes, notifications when AI systems make decisions, and including account ban data in transparency reports. It also suggests dedicated reporting channels for high-risk individuals facing threats. Whether Meta will act on these recommendations remains uncertain, but the board plans to accept more similar cases to push for meaningful reform.
