Mario Kart 64 VR Mod Brings Classic Racer to First-Person

A new VR mod for Mario Kart 64 places players directly in the driver's seat with a first-person, head-tracked perspective. Created by developer Ra YRo D TV, the mod transforms the 1997 Nintendo 64 classic by leveraging an existing PC port called Spaghetti Kart. The result is a nauseatingly immersive experience, as demonstrated in footage of the Koopa Troopa Beach track's tunnel shortcut.

The mod's first-person view conveys a sense of speed that the original third-person camera couldn't match, making players feel like they're zooming headfirst down the track rather than watching from behind their kart. Classic N64 visuals gain added charm in VR, and the mod includes a VR options menu allowing adjustments to stereo depth, eye height, and HUD placement.

Available for free on GitHub, the mod requires users to already own a Mario Kart 64 ROM or extract one from a physical cartridge. Nintendo has shown limited interest in VR beyond the Virtual Boy and a Nintendo Labo kit, making this fan project a compelling option for retro gaming enthusiasts with PC VR headsets.
