Nintendo's Virtual Boy app is now available to download on Switch and Switch 2 as part of its Nintendo Classics offering. The retro gaming experience requires a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and a dedicated $100 accessory that replicates the original 1995 console's distinctive design.

Unlike Nintendo's other retro emulators, this version needs special hardware - a bipod-style add-on with a slot for sliding in your Switch or Switch 2. The $25 cardboard alternative is also available, though existing Labo VR headsets won't work with this system. The accessory is wireless, unlike the original console's wired connection.

Launching with seven games including 3D Tetris, Galactic Pinball, and Virtual Boy Wario Land, the app brings Nintendo's stereoscopic 3D experiment to modern hardware. More titles like Mario Clash and Space Invaders Virtual Collection will arrive later. While the original Virtual Boy was a commercial failure, Nintendo is giving players a chance to experience one of gaming's most unusual experiments without the original's awkward facemask design.
