Indie Game Spotlight: New Releases, Delays, and Steam Summer Sale Deals

The Steam Summer Sale kicked off this week with deep discounts across the platform, running through July 9. Valve timed the Steam Machine reservation process to coincide with the sale, hoping to offset the hardware's premium price with savings from frequent PC storefront promotions. Unlike consoles, PC gaming doesn't require paid online subscriptions, and users can build custom Steam Machines with existing PC parts.

Several indie titles caught our attention. Dark Scrolls ($10) delivers a From Software-inspired roguelite platformer with Master System visuals and local co-op support, though the perk economy feels punishingly random. Mini Air Hockey ($1) experiments with Steam Deck touchpads for a two-player air hockey experience, while Dart Racer ($10, 20% off until July 7) offers arcade podracing with optional VR support in early access.

Studio news brought mixed updates. Douze Dixiémes, creators of MIO: Memories in Orbit, shuttered after their Metroidvania failed to break through in a crowded market. Meanwhile, Ratatan slipped from its July 16 release to October 15 for additional polish. Narrative platformer Deer & Boy ($20, 10% off) joins the lineup with its Inside-inspired storytelling and family-friendly design.

These releases showcase the indie scene's creative range, from experimental touchpad controls to retro-inspired mechanics. The Steam Deck's growing library proves PC gaming's accessibility advantage over console ecosystems, especially during major sales events.
