Google has officially announced Googlebooks, a new laptop category built for a Gemini-first world. Unlike ChromeOS, Googlebooks runs on Android, enabling closer integration with Android phones. This shift allows Google to implement Android features more easily on laptops, addressing previous limitations where ChromeOS required grafting features like Quick Share and Phone Hub to work with Android.

The new platform offers several Android-focused features, including Quick Access for immediate phone content sharing, Create Your Widget for project dashboards, and a streamlined app viewing system. The Magic Pointer stands out as an AI-powered cursor providing contextual suggestions based on what users point at on screen. Google emphasizes this improved integration as the key differentiator from ChromeOS.

Hardware will come from manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, Dell and HP, with Google focusing on premium craftsmanship. The devices will feature a distinctive "glowbar" on the lid, though functionality remains unclear. Google plans to continue supporting Chromebooks indefinitely while gradually transitioning users to the new platform.
