Google has officially unveiled the Fitbit Edge, its latest health and fitness tracker, which will be in stores starting October 27 for $179.99. The slim, minimalistic wearable doesn't include every feature of a Pixel Watch, but it is more advanced than the Fitbit Air while keeping a compact OLED display.
Like the Pixel Watch, the Fitbit Edge can connect to the Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini, provided users have a Google Health Premium subscription. The device compiles fitness, health and medical data to create weekly routines and workout plans that adjust automatically to a user's schedule. Google says it tracks more than 50 exercise modes and offers real-time visual guidance that encourages users to push harder or take a break. The company also claims a 40 percent improvement in built-in GPS tracking accuracy.
The Fitbit Edge includes Google's Health Guardian, designed to detect major shifts in health metrics over time, including blood pressure and insulin resistance. Continuous heart rate monitoring and ECG-based rhythm assessments can alert users to alarmingly high or low heart rates. For sleep, Google says sleep stage detection is 15 percent more accurate than previous generations. Battery life is rated at a full day from five minutes of charging, or a full week from a complete 90-minute charge, and a replaceable battery adds longevity.
The Fitbit Edge is available for preorder through the Google Store in Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon, as well as a Stephen Curry Special Edition starting at $219.99. Buyers can choose from several bands, including the Active Sport, Performance Loop, Metal Links and Magnet options. Google is including three months of Google Health Premium with each purchase.
