Colin Angle, co‑founder of iRobot, unveiled a new venture called Familiar Machines & Magic that will produce companion robots instead of vacuum cleaners. The company’s first prototype, dubbed a Familiar, promises to perceive, adapt, and interact with people in ways that feel natural and consistent. Angle said the next era of robotics centers on sustaining human connection.

The prototype sports a touch‑sensitive coat, cameras, and a microphone array, all powered by a custom small multimodal model optimized for social reasoning. Designed for expressive, whole‑body movement, it aims to communicate attention, awareness, and intent. While no retail price is announced, the company compares the device to a pet that cost $50–$125 at shelters.

Angle emphasized that the Familiar’s purpose is proof of concept, not a finished product. The company has yet to set a launch date or price. Still, the move signals a shift toward socially aware robots that can build trust and companionship, a niche that could redefine home automation and pet ownership.

Consumers eye the Familiar as a potential tech pet that balances affection with algorithmic predictability. Industry observers note that by integrating multimodal sensing and contextual memory, the robot could outperform traditional toys and even some animal shelters’ offerings. If successful, Familiar Machines & Magic may set a new standard for emotional engagement in consumer robotics.
