ByteDance Sells Moonton to Savvy Games for $6 Billion, Shifting Gaming Focus to AI

ByteDance has agreed to sell its gaming unit Moonton to Saudi-backed Savvy Games Group for $6 billion, marking a significant shift for the TikTok parent company away from the competitive mobile games market. The deal, reported by Bloomberg and set for near-term completion, involves Moonton, developer of the massively popular *Mobile Legends: Bang Bang* (downloaded 1.5 billion times), which was a core part of ByteDance's gaming ambitions. ByteDance began winding down its gaming operations in 2023, shutting its Nuverse division that published titles like *Marvel Snap* and *Ragnarok X: Next Generation*, and has since pivoted heavily towards AI development, directly competing with Chinese rivals.

Savvy Games, owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), has been aggressively expanding its gaming portfolio, recently acquiring *Pokémon Go* developer Niantic for $3.5 billion and being a key investor in Electronic Arts' $55 billion private buyout. This sale represents a major consolidation move in an industry experiencing significant layoffs, with roughly 45,000 jobs lost between 2022 and 2025, and underscores the Saudi fund's strategy of acquiring established gaming brands. The transaction is a clear signal of ByteDance's strategic realignment and Savvy Games' growing influence in global gaming.
