ByteDance Aims to Dominate AI with Doubao

ByteDance launched a covert AI initiative in summer 2023 from a converted warehouse in Shanghai, assembling engineers into an unnamed “AI innovation” unit. Within two months they prototyped a consumer chatbot that would become Doubao—the country’s most popular AI app.

Doubao now boasts 324 mn monthly users, and for many Chinese consumers the word “doubao” has become shorthand for AI itself. Zhang Yiming, ByteDance’s founder, sees the chatbot as a stepping stone to a full‑fledged AI empire that spans frontier models, video generation, cloud infrastructure and custom chips—what Nvidia’s Jensen Huang calls the “five‑layered AI cake.”

To back this vision, ByteDance has out‑spended rivals on AI research, data‑center expansion, and its cloud unit Volcano Engine, while also advancing video models like Seedance and eye‑ing a proprietary chip. Shares have surged to a peak of $600 bn, yet analysts warn the bet is risky amid concerns over chip oversupply and the sustainability of the AI boom.

Zhang Yiming’s long‑term plan is to transform ByteDance from a social‑media juggernaut into a global AI platform that distributes consumer services at massive scale.
